Hit Australian improvisational comedy show, “Thank God You're Here,” landed in the United States joining the list of 10 other countries worldwide including Denmark, Sweden, Russia, Israel and The Netherlands. Starting its third season in Australia, the show averages 1.7 million viewers each week.
Developed by Melbourne-based Working Dog Productions, the show challenges celebrity guests to enter a door and, costumed appropriately, bluff their way through a comedy sketch. The guests are then judged on whose gags get the biggest laughs. It is hosted by David Alan Grier and features Dave Foley (Kids in the Hall, Newsradio).
Olin says, “This show is really a lot of fun! The challenge is in the constant set changes -- enough equipment has to be on hand for quick changes from right to left stages, with center stage being home base.” The show is taped almost ‘to time’ to preserve the improvisational quality of each skit.
5 sets are used per show so Olin used his “basic combo for TV”: 1Ks, 2Ks and Source 4 lekos. “It is somewhat standard [lighting] fair to really highlight the sets,” Younger explains, “the producers wanted comedic, bright and very “up feeling” lighting – the actors had to have the freedom to play out their improvised scenes wherever they wound up in/around the sets.”
