Kirk
Witherspoon,
an award-winning lighting designer and partner in Design Partners
Inc. since 1987, began his career in junior high, running light
boards and doing tech chores. “I started in tech theatre because I
didn’t want to sing in the choir,” he says. After over 150 shows in
technical theatre in college and local and regional theatre, as well
as stints in radio and television, Kirk felt it was time to go on
the road. Bus and truck as well as national tours plus a little Rock
‘n Roll occupied his time for the next five years. Tiring of the
constant travel, Kirk’s last tour dumped him in Los Angeles where he
joined the staff of NBC-Burbank. After twelve years with NBC as an
electrician, lighting director and then Chief Lighting Designer,
he left for The Klages Group, which eventually became Design
Partners. Currently Kirk is the Lighting Consultant and Primary
Lighting Designer for Fox Sports, Fox Sports Net and Speed Channel.
There he supervises lighting for over 25 shows in 16 studios in Los Angeles,
Charlotte, New York and ten regions of the USA. Kirk has received
several Emmy nominations, an ACE Award and two Sports Tech Team
Emmys.
