Once again Buena Vista production executive Carlos Torres called Design Partners lighting designer Lee Rose when he found out that Regis & Kelly were planning a week of shows from the West Coast. Having already worked with Regis & Kelly on shows at Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Mount Rushmore and the Ravinia Amphitheater in Chicago, Lee was productions choice for lighting designer in Los Angeles.
The shows were set to be taped at the new facilities of the Los Angeles ABC affiliate, KABC on their B Stage. A set, similar to the one at their home studio in New York was designed by production designers Jim Cuomo. It featured the same basic areas that the NY set has, although the skyline behind the hosts in Los Angeles instead of New York. There is also a band area which featured performances by Earth, Wind & Fire, Bo Bice (from American Idol) and Raven Symone.
The shows were taped in digital standard definition using the Sweetwater Digital production truck and 5 cameras. In from NY for the show included director Brian Chapman, AD Michelle Campbell, Stage Manager Julian Abio, TD David Liebeskind, camera operators Pat Clark & Jim Brill and graphics op Anna Moore.
Lee designed a lighting package that used both hard and soft key lights for the talking areas and the audience faces, color and texture lighting for all the set walls, back lighting for both the host and audience translight backdrops as well as a package of Martin Mac 2000 profiles and wash lights for the performance area and the audience back light.
Assistant LD Kelly Waldman worked with Head Electric Robert Dick and the crew from IATSE Local 33 to get the show up and running. Lee’s long time associate Paul Lennon acted as automated lighting director and programmed for the effects, used on travel trivia and for the performances.
