For over 2 decades Design Partners lighting designer Lee Rose has provided the lighting design for the musical performances on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve," and this year was no exception. Musical acts for the 35th consecutive year of the special will include Fergie, Natasha Bedingfield, Meat Loaf and Latin music phenomenon RBD, all from the Hollywood party with Fergie hosting, From New York at the Nokia Theater performances included; Rhianna, Ludicrous and KT Tunstall with Rhianna hosting and Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest hosting live from Times Square.
For the Hollywood party Lee designed a lighting package almost exclusively of automated lights including; Martin MAC 2000 Profiles, Vari-lite models VL3000 spots, VL2500 wash and VL1000, and VL5arc. Also used in the lighting package were Color Kinetics Colorblasts and Kino Flo fixtures with a combination of Super Blue and daylight tubes. The entire package, save a few key light fresnels were run on the Virtuoso programmed by Paul Lennon.
To complement the stage design in Hollywood, Lee and production designer Bruce Ryan put together a package of digital display equipment from Los Angeles Vendor XL Video. Programmed by Martin Phillips on Mbox Media Servers from PRG, the package included 2 12’ x 20’ MiPix walls, 4 18” x 6’ I-lite6 Columns, 4 8’ x 33’ SoftLED drapes and 60 HD Versatubes.
This years added production for sponsor Nokia at their Nokia Theater in Times Square had Bruce and Lee designing a stage set and lighting that included a complete background of SoftLED curtains with a center Barco D-7 screen with an oval surround. Having only 2 days to set up in New York, Lee brought Paul Lennon and Martin Phillips in to the previz studio, ShowViz Lite Lab in Hollywood, to pre-program the lighting and media cues for the production in New York thus saving immense amounts of money for overnight programming calls at the venue in New York.
The specials are presentations of dick clark productions, inc. Dick Clark, Ryan Seacrest and Allen Shapiro are the executive producers. Larry Klein produces and Barry Glazer directs. Writer is Barry Adelman. Production designer is Bruce Ryan. Bob Bardo is executive in charge of production.
