Lighting Designer Lee Rose was called in by producers Stephanie Bennett and Barbara Orbison to work with director / cinematographer Tony Mitchell on a very special event for HBO. Roy Orbison & Friends; A Black & White Night brought together some of music's greatest talents including; Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits and k.d. Lang, all to work onstage with one of their idols, the great Roy Orbison. Shot at the historic Coconut Grove at Los Angeles' Ambassador Hotel in 35mm, 16mm & 8mm black and white film stock the project was challenging for a lighting designer. To work solely in the gray scale palette without the use of color meant Lee had to think in terms of "types of light". Using a combination of both hard and soft lighting fixtures and by using extremes in angles of light and almost a "Film Noir" sense of contrast, Lee was able to develop interesting lighting looks for the entire concert performance. Although the project aired originally on HBO the home DVD release has since been a best seller. |
