Richard Kelly’s upcoming 2007 release,
Southland Tales, is his directorial follow-up to his first feature,
Donnie Darko. The ensemble piece is set in Los Angeles on July 4,
2008, where social, economic and environmental disaster is an
imminent threat.
Based on his specialty lighting design work for the films Almost
Famous and Vanilla Sky, the Southland Tales production called on Lee
Rose to work with Director of Photography Steven B. Poster, ASC and
to design the automated lighting for the film’s extravagant and
surprising finale.
“To accomplish the director’s vision, we acquired and integrated a
blue laser system for the scene. Blue is particularly difficult to
shoot on film but was required by both the director’s vision and the
greenscreen composites being done in the set, that is why the normal
green laser would not work” notes Rose.
Under the deft eye of Alec Hammond, Production Designer, the film’s
final scenes showcase an incredible set design depicting the atrium
of a ‘MegaZepplin’, a giant airship of the future. A large part of
the scene features the track Memory Gospel by Moby with stars Sarah
Michelle Gellar, The Rock, and Mandy Moore all on stage dancing.
Working with Chief Lighting Technician, Elan Yaari and Key Grip,
Vidal Cohen, Rose used Martin MAC 2000 Performance automated
lighting fixtures to build the scene-enhancing looks. To accommodate
specific actions in the scene, Rose coordinated between the laser
system and the conventional and automated lighting programmers.
“Illumination Dynamics was the contractor for all the lighting
equipment on the feature and added the automated equipment for these
scenes,” says Rose. “Working with Mark Rudge, their Director of
Automated and Theatrical Lighting, on the automation was a real
pleasure. His equipment knowledge and production experience are
exactly what every lighting director looks for when working on any
production.”
Currently in post-production, Southland Tales is directed by Richard
Kelly and produced by Sean McKittrick, Bo Hyde, Kendall Morgan,
Matthew Rhodes. Christa Vausbinder is the Production Supervisor and
Sara Scarritt is Production Coordinator. |
