THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL CONCERT SEGMENT

 

This special segment for the CBS Daytime drama was set up on historic Stage 33 at CBS TV City in Los Angeles [the former home of The Price is Right and The Carol Burnett Show]. Constantine Maroulis, of American Idol fame, performs 5 songs with co-cast.  Kim’s challenge was having only 1 day to set-up and shoot a full on concert look.  He used a Martin package including 2K washes and 2K spots, Mac 300s, 500s and 600s, all controlled by a Wholehog board and operated by programmer Josh Hutchings. Kim used standard rock and roll lighting and was able to achieve a big concert look on a fixed budget.  He explains that “any light that wasn’t moving was double hung on truss par bars; we had 4 follow spots and incorporated the dramatic lighting for the side & backstage areas.” Non-concert scenes were taped in these areas to fit into the drama’s regular story.  Kim also needed to light the audience and meticulously matched the concert cues “onto” the audience’s faces.
