One of the top movies of 2000, Almost Famous won the 2001 Oscar® for Best Screenplay. Actresses Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand were Oscar® nominees in the category of Best Supporting Actress. The film also stars Patrick Fugit, Billy Cudrup, Anna Paquin, Bijou Phillips, Jason Le, and Noah Taylor.
For the re-creation of the 1970’s concert scenes, filmed at the Sports Arena complex in San Diego, California, Lighting Designer Kim Killingsworth was called in to create a true-to-life 70’s lighting scheme. Lighting Designer Lee Rose came in to work with Killingsworth and to act as the on-site consultant during the filming of the concert scenes. Rose and Killingsworth used a lighting system of mostly Par-64 fixtures, as they were the dominant fixture type used by touring rock acts at that time, but augmented the lighting design using some Martin Professional Mac 600 and 500 automated wash and spot fixtures. Rose notes, “As these units didn’t exist during the time period in which the movie is set, Kim and I, along with Director of Photography, John Toll, decided against moving or changing the color of these fixtures while film was rolling. The fixtures did however allow for the highlighting of areas of the scenes, on a shot by shot basis and helped keep the production on schedule.”
Directed and Written by Cameron Crowe, the film relates the story of a teenage journalist writing for Rolling Stone magazine assigned to cover the 70’s rock band Stillwater. The semi-autobiographical film is based loosely on Crowe’s experience as a teenage writer for Rolling Stone. Kate Hudson’s character, Penny Lane, was based on two women Crowe met during the early 70's – Bebe Buell and Pennie Trumble.
