The set at Empire Studios-LBI is designed to work for two shows, A Que No Puedes (I Bet You Can’t) and El Show De Lagrimita Y Costel (Lagrimita y Costel are the famous father & son duo who star in their own comedic network television show in Mexico and have their own live venue. Now, for the first time, they are unleashing their talent in the U.S. Lagrimita has been entertaining for over 30 years and son, Costel, is a chart-topping musician.) The station owners wanted one set that could accommodate a different look for the two shows. Production Designer Jay Heiserman designed a set that can be lighted internally with Color Blasts [LED fixtures] making it possible to actually change the stage colors. For the game show, A Que No Puedes, the set color changes per segment, as well as the use of flashing colors to indicate right and wrong answers and successful or unsuccessful completions of challenges. In addition, there are two walls of Color Tiles that have various moving graphics in them.
Because the hosts of El Show perform in clown attire, Davis’ look is circus inspired. The walls are channeled so that stripes of color can be inserted to give the illusion of a circus tent. “Instead of the red and white stripes you see in most circus tents, we went with white and pink stripes. It is a great background for the high energy, vaudeville/circus feel of the show.” Davis chases the striped walls and uses the studio spots to ballyhoo for bumpers in and out. She explains “the white in the background works especially well and is distinctive because you don't often see white sets. Again, the station owners were looking for a distinctive look with this set; one that would make someone who is channel surfing stop and look.”
