For the second year in a row, Lighting Designer Greg Brunton lit the Kick-off Concert that started up the 2005 NFL Season on Thursday, September 8th, 2005, The night’s festivities took place from three cities as the league celebrated “The Road to Forty” by looking back at the history of the Super Bowl, honoring last year’s champions and looking ahead to Super Bowl XL. A star-studded musical lineup performed from just outside the Los Angeles Coliseum, Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. (home of the Super Bowl-champion New England Patriots), and Detroit (site of Super Bowl XL on February 5, 2006. Greg Brunton of Design Partners, Inc. was called upon to design this event based on his vast experience of lighting live events such as concerts, specials and award shows. The event aired live on ABC and lead into the season opener between the New England Patriots and Oakland Raiders at Gillette Stadium.
Festivities from Gillette Stadium, hosted bye Freddie Prinze Jr, included a tribute to the Patriots and performances by Green Day and Santana. Trisha Yearwood sang the national anthem. The show featured the first video footage from the Rolling Stones’ “A Bigger Bang” World Tour, which Brunton consulted on adapting the concert lighting for the NFL broadcast. Maroon 5, Kanye West, Good Charlotte and Rihanna performed at the coliseum in Los Angeles.
Once again, the producers for the NFL Kickoff Concert 2005 were Glenn Weiss (who was also the director) and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Productions. The Production Designer was Rene Lagler. PRG, Syncrolites and XL Video supplied the lighting and digital display equipment. Eli McKinney of IGDesigns www.igdesigns.net programmed the media servers and provided original content.
